VISTA – The Vista High football team won its final three games of the season to make it into the San Diego Section Division I playoffs, and it kept rolling against visiting Otay Ranch last night.
It took the Panthers six plays on offense to put up their first 21 points en route to a 35-0 victory.
“Our plan was to absolutely strike first,” said Vista coach Dan Williams. “We wanted to get on top early and let the defense do what we thought they could do.”
On Otay Ranch's first possession, Vista defenders tackled the punter and set up the Panthers' offense at the Mustangs' 5-yard line. Jordan Alexander ran it in from 3 yards out on Vista's second offensive play to make the score 7-0.
Alexander finished with 111 yards on 13 attempts without playing the fourth quarter.
“We've finally decided Alexander is our go-to guy,” said Williams. “He's a little speedy, powerful back.”
On Vista's next possession, it took the Panthers one play to score, with quarterback David Fisher finding Adrian Del Castillo deep for a 69-yard touchdown.
On Vista's third possession, it took three offensive plays for Fisher, while on the run, to find Stefan McClure in the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0.
“I really didn't have a lot of time, so I couldn't set my feet and I had to put it in a place where only he could catch it,” said Fisher. “He's only a sophomore, so there's going to be a lot more to come from McClure.”
Fisher, who took only three snaps in the second half, finished the game 4-of-4 for 118 yards and two touchdowns.
The Vista defense was impressive against the Mustangs (5-5-1, 2-3), forcing seven of 10 possessions to end on punts and three to end on downs.
“Our defense was great tonight,” said Del Castillo, who recorded a sack to go along with his touchdown on offense. “We came out playing our blind-side defense like we are used to.”
Vista (7-4, 3-2) will travel to La Costa Canyon next Friday to take on the No. 1-seeded Mavericks in the second round.
