Patrick Henry's Dabbert scores 3 TDs in win over West Hills

SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE

November 22, 2008

William Dabbert and the Patrick Henry offensive line took over the fourth quarter of last night's San Diego Section Division II playoff opener against visiting West Hills.

A 5-foot-11, 185-pound senior, Dabbert scored two of his three touchdowns over a five-minute stretch of the final period to propel the Patriots to a 28-20 victory.

Henry (7-4) travels to Eastlake for next week's quarterfinals.

Linemen Jeremey Harris and Taylor Ryan led the way for Dabbert, who rushed for 171 yards on 26 carries.

“Those two guys make our run game go,” said Patrick Henry coach Mike Williams.

Dabbert agreed.

“We made some adjustments at the half, and the holes began to open up more often,” Dabbert said. “All I did is capitalize on them.”

The Patriots pounded out 345 yards on 46 rushes against West Hills (4-7), which was missing two starters from a lineup in which the majority go both ways.

After West Hills' Christian Fonseca (two TDs) tied it at 14 on a 7-yard run the first play of the fourth quarter, Dabbert capped back-to-back Henry scoring drives with rushes of 5 and 21 yards.

“This is the first playoff game for everybody on our team,” Dabbert said. “For me to be a part of it is really special.”

Gabe Chammas led the Henry defense with three sacks.

“This was an exciting night,” Chammas said. “Every time their quarterback (Joe Roberts) would bootleg it out, I just got on him. I don't think he ever saw me coming.”

Williams said he was as pleased with the overall progress of the football program during the regular season as he was the playoff victory.

“Don't get me wrong, this was a nice win for our kids,” Williams said. “But given the way our program has been, this is all just kind of gravy.”

Nevertheless, this topping had a tangy taste to it.

West Hills' Alan Parks blocked a 49-yard field goal attempt by Anthony Rosales on the final play of the first half to hold Henry's advantage at 14-7 at the break.

Wolf Pack linebacker William Lobaugh logged 17 tackles for the night.
