He was ridiculed as a superficial cheerleader, but in retrospect, it wasn't such a dumb prescription for a country paralyzed by fear.
A native San Diegan, Jenkins is a third-generation newspaperman with more than 20 years of experience. He has served as the editor of the La Jolla Light and city editor of the Times Advocate in Escondido.
Before going into journalism in his early 30s, Jenkins taught several years at San Diego State University. He earned a doctoral degree in English literature from the University of British Columbia.
His wife, Renee, is retired from teachng at Francis Parker School. His son, Lee, is a sportswriter for Sports Illustrated.
