U.S. gymnasts headed to San Diego in Sept.

UNION-TRIBUNE BREAKING NEWS TEAM

August 18, 2008

SAN DIEGO – If you've enjoyed the Olympic medal-winning performances of Team USA gymnasts Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson in Beijing, you have a chance to see them in San Diego on Sept. 14.

Johnson, Liukin and other members of the Team USA mens' and womens' gymnastics teams will perform at the San Diego Sports Arena for the taping of an ABC television special, “Frosted Pink with a Twist.” The show will air nationwide Oct. 12.

Tickets, from $33 to $83, went on sale Monday through Ticketmaster.

Also appearing will be singers Carole King, Cyndi Lauper and Jesse McCartney; and Paul Hamm, 2004 Olympic all-around men's gymnastics champion.

“Frosted Pink with a Twist” is the anchor event of a multi-year multimedia campaign aimed at educating people about cancers that primarily affect women.

The special will be hosted this year by 1984 Olympic all-around gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton.

“Frosted Pink with a Twist” was created by Mike Burg, chief executive officer of Edge Entertainment and Edge Marketing & Management. Burg has twice successfully battled Hodgkin's disease, a cancer of the lymphatic system.

The Edge companies also created the Teen Choice Awards, Hope Rocks and Action Sports Awards on FOX; the Kids Choice Awards on Nickelodeon; and Ice Wars on CBS.
