SAN DIEGO: The annual count of homeless people in San Diego County has received a $50,000 boost from the United Way.
The Regional Task Force on the Homeless, which conducts the annual head count, will use the money to bring in more people to tally the number of homeless people on urban streets, in rural areas and in shelters.
The annual “point in time” count is conducted in January and helps determine how much federal and other money the county will receive to combat homelessness.
“Helping the Regional Task Force on the Homeless conduct the most accurate count of homeless individuals in the county will allow us to help San Diego County secure important funding,” said Doug Sawyer, president of the United Way of San Diego County.
The regional task force estimates there are 9,600 homeless people in the county, 2,300 of whom live in rural areas and include day laborers and farmworkers.
